Keiji Haino

Keiji Haino performs solo, moving between cymbal, guitar and voice. Across more than five decades, he has built one of the most formidable and unclassifiable bodies of work in experimental music. A vocalist, guitarist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist whose output spans solo performances of pulverising intensity, the psychedelic heaviness of Fushitsusha, and the longform improvisational structures of numerous duos, trios and ad hoc groupings. Haino’s practice resists reduction to any single mode: a performance might move from silence to obliterating volume within minutes, or sustain a single gesture for an hour. His voice, which ranges from a barely audible whisper to a scream that seems to originate somewhere below the body, is as much his instrument as the guitar. Releases on PSF, Alien8, Black Truffle, Drag City and many others number in the hundreds. Each performance remains a singular event and a rare thing to witness.
