Studio Rizoma & Renato Grieco

HE IMAGINATION THE EARTH ASKS OF US
A conversation for two voices with Renato Grieco and Giorgio Mega (Fondazione Studio Rizoma)

A conversation on artistic and cultural practices emerging from Southern Italy and the Mediterranean that, through their relationship with the land, question the forms of belonging, identity and representation that have historically shaped these territories.

Drawing on projects such as Studio Rizoma’s Between Land and Sea and Renato Grieco’s Brucialacrime, the discussion will focus on situated practices born from consciously inhabiting these places: places marked by historical processes of marginalisation and transformation, yet also shaped by new forms of cultural production, research and imagination.

What possibilities open up when territory is no longer just a backdrop, but becomes material, interlocutor and the very condition of artistic practice? And how can these experiences help build autonomous ways of telling and living the contemporary Mediterranean?

Giorgio Mega is a Sicily-based curator and producer whose work focuses primarily on sound-based artistic research and cultural geographies. He is co-founder of Fondazione Studio Rizoma.

Renato Grieco is a Naples-based composer and artist. Since 2012 he has performed internationally under the moniker kNN. His music grows out of the semantics of musique concrète and culminates in orchestrations where ancient instruments, imaginary lutherie and sculptural rooms coexist. In recent years he has developed numerous collaborations as a performer, musician and sound dramaturg, creating instrumental and electroacoustic compositions, performances, installations, records, Hörspiele (radio plays), lectures, music theatre works, scores and librettos.

Fondazione Studio Rizoma is an international hub that promotes an independent artistic and social programme while fostering the growth of the surrounding cultural ecosystem, with a particular focus on the city of Palermo and its new home at Teatro Garibaldi.
