As the “hardest-hustling DJ in Africa”, Coco Em burns with a fiery passion for music from East Africa and beyond. The Nairobi-based DJ, producer, curator, and filmmaker champions African producers and hyperlocal styles: from amapiano to Swahili trap (‘shrap’) and from afro house to gengeton (a mix of reggaeton and ‘genge’, Kenyan hip-hop with dancehall influences) and gqom. It makes sense that you can’t separate her art from her activism. Whether calling for land reform on her debut EP, decrying discriminatory border policies via the Pass Pass initiative, or supporting African femme producers with the Sim Sima platform, she’s a tireless advocate for change. At Sónar 2024, come feel her equally tis energy for the dancefloor.
Co-curated with reworks at Sónar 2024.
