Julian Henriques

Julian Henriques is a filmmaker, sound artist, researcher, and teacher internationally recognised for his groundbreaking work on Jamaican sound system culture, technology, and subaltern knowledge systems. He is a Professor in the School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he co-directs the Centre of Sound, Technology and Culture and co-founded the Sound System Outernational research group. As Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded Sonic Street Technologies (2021–2025) project, he mapped the global distribution and influence of sound system cultures. His sound art installations include Knots & Donuts at Tate Modern. He co-authored Changing the Subject and wrote Sonic Bodies and Amplifying Power (in press). Julian wrote and directed the reggae musical We the Ragamuffin and the feature film Babymother, and, through his independent production company, has produced documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, ZDF, Arte, and others.
